Best Things to Do at the Colosseum

The Colosseum has several visitor routes, and the ticket you choose determines what you can actually enter. Standard admission covers the main levels and museum, while the Arena Floor, Underground and Attic use specific ticket options. Compare the experiences below before deciding whether an upgrade is worth paying for.

What is actually worth planning your ticket around?

The biggest ticket mistake is paying for “premium access” without knowing what changes. Each route gives you a different perspective, so choose according to what you actually want to experience.

01 Underground access

Underground — best for understanding how the spectacles worked

The hypogeum sits below the original arena floor. Its corridors and service areas supported the movement of performers, animals and scenery before they appeared above. Seeing it turns the Colosseum from a monumental ruin into a working entertainment complex.

Choose it if You are interested in the organisation behind the games and want more historical context than a standard panoramic visit provides.
02 Arena access

Arena Floor — the strongest change of perspective

Most visitors look down into the amphitheatre from the main levels. Arena access reverses the view: you stand close to the level where the spectacles took place and look upward into the surrounding seating structure.

Check before booking A Full Experience Arena ticket and an Arena-only product do not necessarily provide the same route or amount of time inside.
03 Attic access

Attic — best for height, architecture and wider views

The Attic route takes you beyond the main visitor levels to a much higher perspective. This route is about the scale of the building, its upper structure and views across the surrounding archaeological park.

Choose it if Panoramic views and architecture matter more to you than seeing the underground workings of the arena.
04 Standard ticket

Second Level — the strongest part of standard admission

The second level gives one of the clearest overall views inside the Colosseum. From here, the arena, exposed underground structure and surrounding seating can be understood together.

Do not underestimate it You do not need a premium route for a worthwhile visit. For many visitors, this is the strongest viewpoint on the standard route.
05 Standard ticket

Colosseum Museum — useful context before you leave

The museum connects the surviving architecture with objects, archaeological evidence and different phases of the monument’s history. It becomes especially useful after you have already seen the amphitheatre.

Worth the stop Do not leave immediately after your main photographs. The museum helps make the architecture easier to interpret.
06 No ticket required

Walk the exterior — the easiest way to understand its scale

Walking around part of the exterior reveals the contrast between the surviving outer wall and the exposed internal structure while giving you a better sense of the amphitheatre’s footprint.

Best for Architecture, wider photographs and understanding how the surviving sections fit together.
!
Arena, Underground and Attic describe different visitor routes.

Do not assume a higher-priced ticket automatically includes all three. Check the exact access areas before booking.

Exterior of the Colosseum in Rome
Use your Colosseum slot as the fixed point of the day. The Forum and Palatine can be organised around your timed Colosseum entry, rather than squeezing all three into one continuous rushed visit.
Included beyond the Colosseum

Do not treat the Roman Forum and Palatine as optional extras

The amphitheatre tells only part of the story. The Forum shows the civic centre of ancient Rome, while the Palatine shifts the visit toward imperial residences and elevated views.

Combined admission

Roman Forum

The Forum was the monumental centre of Roman public life. Follow the main route and use the surviving civic, religious and ceremonial buildings to understand how the valley once functioned.

  • Walk the Via Sacra.
  • Look for major landmarks including the Curia Iulia.
  • See the Forum from an elevated viewpoint as well.
Combined admission

Palatine Hill

The Palatine gives a different experience from the Forum below, with imperial residential areas and broad views over the archaeological park.

  • Allow more walking time than the map may suggest.
  • Expect stone, slopes and uneven surfaces.
  • Use the viewpoints to understand the Forum below.
Full Experience

SUPER sites

Some Full Experience products include additional archaeological interiors within the Forum-Palatine area.

Separate admission

Domus Aurea

Nero’s palace is nearby, but it should be planned as a separately ticketed visit rather than as part of standard Colosseum admission.

Practical reality

This is a large site

Forum and Palatine require considerably more walking than the Colosseum. Comfortable shoes, water and realistic timing matter.

A simpler visit strategy

Plan everything around your booked Colosseum entry

01 Protect your booked time

Arrive with enough margin for security and orientation rather than reaching the entrance at your scheduled minute.

02 Give the Colosseum proper time

Do not rush the main levels simply because the Forum is next on your itinerary.

03 Use longer-validity tickets properly

If your ticket allows another day, splitting the wider archaeological park can make the experience much less tiring.

Before you visit

Four details worth checking before you leave for the Colosseum

Ticket names can look similar while giving access to different areas. Check these four points before finalising your plan.

01 · Check your timed entry

The Colosseum portion uses a reserved entry time, so build the wider park visit around that booking.

02 · Standard access may be enough

If your priority is the amphitheatre and its main viewpoints, you may not need a special-access route.

03 · Know what your upgrade adds

Arena, Underground and Attic solve different visitor needs. Pay extra only when that specific route matters to you.

04 · Re-check the timetable

Opening and closing times change through the year, so confirm current information close to your visit.
